Today is the day to untangle! Let’s talk about a great special category of Port Wine: the Great Tawny Ports.
But first, some numbers that will help us understand these wines:
Indication of age
Wines with an Indication of Age are wines Tawny Port, rich and complex, which remain for long periods in oak casks. It is extraordinary wines obtained by wine blends from several harvests in order to join different organoleptic characteristics (color, aroma and flavor), thus gaining complexity, and whose average age is indicated on the label (10 years, 20 years, 30 years, 40 years). Over the years the wines become more liqueur and clear, with features and flavors of honey, cinnamon, chocolate, among others.
Tawny 10 years Revealing a little more evolution than the Tawny Reserve, these wines have similarities, but with the guarantee that the wine has the characteristics of a wine with ten years old.
This is the case of THE FIFTH Murças Tawny Port 10 Years, a project to spur seal the Douro where David Baverstock and Luís Patrão created this wine, blended from wines of the grape varieties Tinta Amarela, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão and matured in Casks used for an average period of 10 years. The result is a very complex wine on the nose, with hints of dried fruit, including figs and nuts and hints of vanilla. Elegant and intense, and great final freshness.
Wine Quinta das Murças
Tawny 20 years with a range of colors ranging from reddish amber to golden amber, these wines are rare gems, full of fruit and more evolved flavors, concentrated by aging in small oak barrels. They have great intensity of aromas and flavors of toasted vanilla and dried fruit, balanced by delicate notes of oak.
The winemaker Dirk Niepoort already accustomed us to great wines and nailed it this NIEPOORT Port 20 Years, a fabulous wine aroma, with candied fruit notes and dried apricots that feel on the palate, well combined with soft dry fruit notes (walnut) at the end.
In this wine are represented Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinto Cao, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão, Tinta Roriz and others and aged in small oak barrels (550 liters) in the cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia for many years.
Tawny 30 years Some ports are selected for a longer aging in wooden barrels. The gradual exposure to air concentrates and intensifies its initial fruit, yielding more complex features, such as honey and spices underlined by deep aromas of dried apricots, hazelnuts and vanilla.
This GRAHAM’S 30 YEARS, is the perfect example of this category with a wonderfully fragrant nose, with class, displaying great variety of nuts. Ripe, concentrated, rich and silky, with notes of honey. Simply delicious with an impressive lingering finish. This wine produced by Symington Family Estates house is an award-winning wine, as he won a Gold Medal at the International Wine Challenge 2000.
Tawny 40 years old The final classification of Tawny Ports presents us wonderfully concentrated and complex wines. Intense, they almost explode in the mouth, filling the palate of aromatic flavors that we take over the senses.
This VALLADO QUINTA Tawny Port 40 Years, is born one of the oldest Quintas of the Douro Valley, which belonged to D. Antonia, the “Ferreirinha”, which has existed since 1716, the year it was built, linked to family and possession of his descendants. This wine has an intense and complex aromamuito tobacco notes and nuts. very concentrated wine with great structure, English cake notes, figs and roasted nuts. It has an end of endless mouth.
At this level, the passage of time and the power of evaporation, gives these wines a huge concentration and transform us almost an essence.
I end with these sentences that are not mine, but I think exemplify unequivocally the size of Great Tawny …
“These are wines that excite and thrill us, wines that transcend and refer us to moments of reflection. The Tawnys 30 and 40 are above all unique wines and scholars who challenge the senses and stimulate the reason. “…” They are noble and fine wines, true symbols of prestige and tradition. “
